Gamifying the Syllabus: How Gaming Principles Create Engaging Assessment Systems

Session Description

This presentation will discuss how to use game design principles to create game-like assessment systems. The speaker will first discuss several game design principles like progression, open world, and I+1, and how they are inherently engaging. Then he will discuss how to embed those principles in the course design.

Session Goals

By the end of the presentations participants will: 1. Become familiarized with game design principles. 2. Understand the persuasive power of game design. 3. Be able to use game design in their assessment systems. 4. Know how to gamify their courses.

Full Description

The speaker will open with a discussion of video game world design, specifically looking at open vs linear worlds. He will then discuss progression systems in several video games. Discussion will focus on why these things are engaging. Speaker will then pivot to traditional assessment - how it works, what makes it fair / unfair, and how it can be improved. The speaker will then discuss how he has managed to gamify the assessment of his courses by adding an open world and transparent progression philosophy.
