Full Description

"World literature has historically been taught from a white authorship perspective. While these works of literature have made significant contributions to the canon, they do not offer students a rich global perspective. World Literature should encompass authors and perspectives representing the diversity of the globe. In order to address the systematic racism and discrimination present in America, offering a world literature course that has been decolonized allows students a more holistic view of how the past has shaped the present. Allowing students to hear voices that represent the diverse classrooms we teach, give the students a sense of identity and help them make connections from the literature to the present day state of affairs. The use of open educational resources allows for texts to change and allows instructors to not be held to the texts included in an anthology by a publisher. This also gives the instructor the ability to pair juxtaposing voices of a time period, showcasing the varying perspectives that coexisted. This presentation will focus on World Literature from the 16th century to the present day and offer suggestions for how to tailor your course to meet the needs of the students enrolled providing a more inclusive environment and curriculum.
