Paving Roadblocks into Pathways

Session Description

This program is centered around a discussion of student identities which have been seen as having road blocks toward student success, and how we as faculty and staff can re-imagine these roadblocks as ways to empower students and create pathways toward success.

Session Goals

Challenge the idea of diversity groups, and using identity instead to describe people. Then looking at how various identities can enhance the learning the environment at the college and in the classroom. Debunking the idea of a "traditional" college student, especially in the community college setting. Discussing the "classic" student service and classroom model, and where we can change it to adapt to our current student populations.

Full Description

How to do we use student identities as building blocks versus stumbling blocks? First, instead of thinking of diversity which focuses on how something or someone is different, lets recognize identity and get to know our students. What we would think of as a "traditional" student is rare in the community college setting, so it's time we challenge our old perspectives and belief systems regarding higher education if we are to keep up and best serve our students. With our presentation, we want to open up the discussion by sharing research; our personal experiences from working in Student Life, Student Services, and in the classroom as a Faculty member; and hearing what other's are doing in their departments. Then finally, as for the road blocks these student's do face, how can we work together to overcome some them to create more equity?
