The Marvel Project: Remaking US History through Superhero Films

Session Description

The superhero films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe provide a unique way to teach contemporary US history. As cultural products designed to appeal to the largest possible audience, they provide insights into how Americans think about pivotal moments in recent history, including 9/11 and its aftermath, social justice movements, and the rise of Trumpism. The films remake these moments in accordance with long-standing themes in American history, such as an emphasis on individualism, a distrust of established power, and a dualistic ethical understanding.
