Evolving Assessment in Mathematics Education

Session Description

As the world around us changes, needs in education also evolve. Recent research has indicated that not all current standardized testing is effective in assessing students. In this session, we will explore new and innovative methods of assessment and where the future of assessment in mathematics lies.

Session Goals

- Explore new types of assessment items in mathematics education - Inform participants about the need for reform in assessment - Discuss how new test items can be more sensitive to instruction than current frequently used test items - Provide examples of new items that can be used in classrooms and show how participants can get more information about their students' performance from these items

Full Description

This presentation will present a background of assessment under the lens of mathematics education and the issues surrounding assessment in general. We will explore where we are today and talk about how new and innovative types of assessment items can be used to enhance the information we receive regarding our students' performance. Specifically, we will give examples of some test items and show that these items are easy to grade, yet give us a wealth of knowledge about our students if they are effectively constructed. Although the presentation is centered around mathematics in particular, the ideas can be applied to any subject matter. We will also explore the future of assessment and show how we envision the evolution of the development of assessment items to progress.
