Defining Your Advising Philosophy in Three Little Words

Session Description

NACADA's Core Competency Guide states we must, "Articulate a personal philosophy of academic advising." But who has time for that? In this session, attendees will evaluate their beliefs and begin to formulate personal guiding philosophies of advising to be used as a tool for motivation and job satisfaction.

Session Goals

Define Meaning--What does it mean to have a personal philosophy? Determine what influences one's guiding philosophy. Guide attendees in choosing three main words that help define their philosophy. Identify correlation between one's guiding philosophy and job satisfaction/motivation. Identify triggers for the need to revise one's guiding philosophy.

Full Description

Through a power point presentation and brainstorming, this presentation will help attendees pick three (or a few) words that define their purpose in and approach to advising. Examples will show how motivation and job satisfaction can be increased when using a guiding philosophy and how revisions to one's philosophy may be needed over time.
